The GV2025 Roll is now open

The rate-in-the-rand formula that we use to calculate property rates is set to be reduced by 10,2% after healthy property value growth was reported in the General Valuation for 2025. The proposed reduction is subject to draft budget finalisation, and aims to offset property rates increases from the higher property valuations.

In addition, the rates-free benefit has been extended to include the first R500 000 of property value (up from R450 000) and this benefit applies to all properties up to R8 million (up from R7 million). These planned measures will ensure that 60% of our residential properties will experience either a rates decrease, or no change in rates, even though the property value has risen.

Please note: The final rate-in-the-rand will only be determined in May 2026 when the Annual Budget, tariffs and rates are approved by Council after completion of a public participation process.

To view the GV Roll or dispute your property valuation, you can do so via the following:

Please note: Objections must be motivated and supported with market-related information at the valuation date of 1 July 2025. No late objections will be considered.

For more information, please visit the Objecting to your property valuation webpage.

How to apply for "Rates Relief" from the City

FROM THE CITY'S WEBSITE:

"With the start of the new municipal financial year, applications are now open for rates and services relief. The City is bringing financial relief to vulnerable residents in the metro and we urge all eligible residents to apply for the support on offer. Once you have registered as indigent, successful applicants only need to reapply every 12 months from the date of approval. However, applications from residents 60 years and older, will remain valid until the next municipal valuation of their property comes into effect, which is expected to be from 30 June 2026 or until a supplementary valuation is implemented.

Relief is available for indigent households, pensioners and residents who are struggling. We ask residents to visit their nearest customer office to see if they qualify for support. Before re-applying, residents must remember to pay off any money that is owed to the municipality."

UPDATED FAQs  July 2023

"HAVE YOUR SAY"
Invitation to Comment on the draft Mobile Business Trading Areas policy for mobile businesses
The policy will affect about 100 parks throughout the city, including some parks nearby such as KEURBOOM PARK, RONDEBOSCH PARK and RONDEBOSCH COMMON.

The City is in the process of developing a Mobile Business Policy to enable a permitting mechanism that will support interest from mobile businesses.

Currently, we deal with enquiries by mobile business operators - specifically food truck operators - on an ad-hoc basis. This ad-hoc approval process is inconsistent and unclear in the way that mobile business operators are able to access and activate their markets.

"What Tree is That?"

The LKID recently engaged a team of professional arborists to survey the significant trees in our area.  The focus is mainly on trees in public spaces.

Each tree surveyed was photographed, identified, assessed for age, general health, whether pruning was needed, whether diseased or infected, etc. -- and then entered onto the Treeplotter website map.

Residents in our LKID area can access this information at no cost, by simply logging onto the website.
